Today we were introduced to negative numbers on the number line. Just as we have discovered with positive numbers, negative numbers can be written as fractions, decimals, and percents as well as whole numbers. We learned about the opposites of numbers. Question: What is the opposite of -546?

Percent Increase- 6th Grade Unit 6, Lesson 7- 2/24/10

Today we learned about percent increase of a given number. In previous lessons we learned about finding the “percent of” a number. This is basically the same idea, however we add the percent increase to the original number. The number you get after you solve the problem will always be larger than your original number. Kind of confusing, but you guys are doing great. At the end of class we discussed a visual way to represent percent increase- what did we talk about- hint- it is a type of graph… respond to this question for homework. Volume of Cones and Pyramids 8th Grade 2/24/10

Today we discussed several things! We went over “commonsense properties” involving zeroes and ones… additive and multiplicative were two new words that we discussed- what do they mean? We also learned the formula for finding the volume of cones and pyramids. We found that cones and pyramids were 1/3 the size of a cylinder or rectangular pyramid. Tonight you have a variety of homework assignments to complete for me. Firstly, and most importantly, you need to get your IEP sheet signed and returned back to me ASAP. Secondly, you need to respond to my blog- here’s the question- how many cones does it take to fill a cylinder? Lastly you have 2 textbook assignments- Lesson 5 and Lesson 6 for Unit 6- here are the links:

8th Graders:

Nice job in class today. We had to go back and review the idea of combining like terms and we reviewed PEMDAS. You need to have a strong understanding of both of these concepts in order to understand our lesson today, which involved solving equations when you are given a value for x. Please remember to SPEAK UP if you do not understand what is going on in class. These concepts build on one another- if you don’t understand one thing you won’t understand what is coming up. I don’t mind reviewing at all- it is my job to help you understand! Are you looking forward to going to the high school next year? Why or why not?! 6th Graders:

We learned a great new math concept today that you will need for the rest of your life! When you are shopping and see an item that is 30% off- how much is exactly 30%? That is what we learned how to do today. We first had to find out what certain percentages were as decimals. Then, we multiplied the decimal by the original cost of the item. Once we figured out how much off we were going to get, we subtracted it from the original price of the item. Kind of seems like a lot of work, but it is extremely helpful! In class today I mentioned that I used this skill when I went shopping at Target last night. What did I buy at Target? (Respond to the blog for homework). Today we discussed how to estimate percents using percent strips. We also estimated what percent of a shape was filled in using our percent benchmarks- 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%.

6th Grade Percent Equivalents 2/8/10

Today you worked with Natalie on creating a circle graph. I appreciate how hard you worked with her. In class, we refreshed our memory on equivalent fractions. We then used that knowledge to make fractions that are equivalent to something over 100- basically we made it into a percent! Percent = Per hundred, remember? Here is the question I would like you to answer by commenting on this blog entry: When you are given a fraction, how do you make it into a percent using a calculator?

8th Grade Test Tomorrow!

Are you ready 8th graders??? You definitely should be. There are 5 parts of your test. They are: evaluating expressions using PEMDAS, solving addition and subtraction problems with positive negative numbers, writing an expression for word problems, simplifying expressions, and finding the surface area of 3-dimensional shapes- cylinder, pyramid, triangular prism. If you did not get your soft book pages done today you must complete them for homework tonight.
